Jurisdiction:
The U.S. Court of Appeals for the Armed Forces, formerly known as the Court of Military Appeals, consists of five civilian judges appointed by the President for 15-year terms, subject to Senate confirmation. The court exercises appellate jurisdiction over members of the armed forces on active duty and other persons subject to the Uniform Code of Military Justice. Cases on the court’s docket address a broad range of legal issues, including constitutional law, criminal law, evidence, criminal procedure, administrative law, and national security law. Its decisions prior to 1984 were final, but now are subject to Supreme Court review.
