DISTRICT OF COLUMBIA COURTS 
   

The highest court in the District of Columbia is called the Court of Appeals. The trial court of general jurisdiction 

in the District of Columbia is called the Superior Court, which consists of one court whose jurisdiction extends 

throughout  the District.  The Superior Court also has Family, Probate, and Tax divisions.

District of Columbia Court Structure

This Court Structure Chart is prepared by the National Center for State Courts. Abbreviations used in the chart are as follows: “COLR” for court of last resort, “IAC” for intermediate appellate court, “GJC” for general jurisdiction court, and “LJC” for limited jurisdiction court. "CSP Case Types" refers to the specific types of cases heard by the court.
